First Steps Pre-Apprenticeship Programme

The First Steps Pre-Apprenticeship Programme is designed to give young people an opportunity to assess their ability and desire for a career in the construction industry, primarily as a carpenter.

The steps are simple, and they will ensure the trainee gains onsite experience and receives detailed training through our own training workshops carried out by industry experts.

Our objectives are to:

  • Provide trainees with basic training and give them an opportunity to “try before they buy”;
  • Assist those that are successful and who are driven in securing apprenticeships, do just that; and
  • Produce industry leading tradespeople – completing one of our apprenticeships may not be as easy as others but our tradespeople will be sought out across the industry.

The pathway to tradesperson carpenter include:

  1. Bettabuilt 13-week introduction to construction;
  2. Carpentry apprenticeship under BCITO and with significant Bettabuilt guidance; and
  3. Gain a National Certificate in Carpentry.

From here the steps may vary depending on the individual.  We will encourage all new tradespeople to complete the National Certificate in Carpentry (Advanced) and for those seeking senior leadership roles to consider completing diplomas or degrees in Construction Management.  This could open the door to Site Management, Quantity Surveying or Project Management roles.

First Steps is based on a 13-week cycle including, but not limited to:

  • Life skills training;
  • Workshop based training activities;
  • Working on site as a Construction Labourer; and
  • Site based working with tradesmen from multiple disciplines (Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical)

This will provide the platform for you to make an informed decision between different trades and picking your own path.

It is important that all recruits understand that completing First Steps does not guarantee them an apprenticeship.  Minimum standards need to be met and Bettabuilt and their specialist trades partners have limited spaces for full apprenticeships, however we will endeavour to place all those who pass.
